Our mission is to empower girls in grades 3-8 in the greater Philadelphia area by building their self-esteem and confidence to pursue STEM fields. In general, women remain underrepresented in the STEM field, and minority women represent fewer than 1 in 10 employed STEM professionals. According to 2015 PSSA results, 27,020 females grade 3-8 were tested in mathematics and 14,794 (55%) tested below basic. For the subject of science 8,961 females grades 3-8 were tested and 3,490 (39%) tested below basic. The data shows the disparity is the greatest in mathematics, with science lagging behind. The test scores won’t increase along with minority female involvement in STEM until these issues are addressed early on. It is also important to mention boys performed slightly better than girls in mathematics, so it suggests that this may have more to do with the female students believing they can’t do well. According to a study, boys associated math with their own gender while girls associated math with boys, this take roots as early as second grade. We want to combat this deficit by providing academic enrichment services to students.
