Upper Gywnedd Township has announced that they will be opening their new pickleball courts on Saturday, June 24th at 9:00am. The ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on location at Parkside Place Park next to the existing tennis courts. Light refreshments and snacks will be served as well as open play for those interested in trying out the new game. Local residents will be on-hand to teach the rules and basic strategy from 9:00am – 11:00am. Paddles and balls will be provided for those who need them. Please wear sneakers.

On January 23rd, the Board of Commissioners approved the construction of four pickleball courts at Parkside Place Park. The courts were designed by T&M Asscociates and constructed by Top-A-Court. The pickleball courts are located adjacent to the existing tennis courts where the tennis hitting wall area resides. The hitting wall has been relocated inside the tennis courts along the back-side fence on court 5. For those not familiar with the sport, pickleball is a racquet game created in 1965 in Washington State and combines various elements of tennis, table tennis, badminton and wiffleball. Pickleball is often referred to as one of the fastest-growing sports in America. It is designed to be a low-impact sport that also provides an excellent work out. Pickleball is typically played in teams on courts that, visually, look similar to standard tennis courts, but are much smaller. In fact, four pickleball courts can fit into roughly the same footprint as one standard tennis court. Upper Gwynedd Township has experienced first-hand the growing popularity of pickleball. In 2014, in response to many requests by residents, the Township striped one existing tennis court for pickleball as a pilot program. Over the course of the ensuing year, usage of this court increased so steadily and dramatically, that it justified the approval of the Board to construct dedicated pickleball courts.

In May, 2017 with the assistance of Triad Associates, the Township received a Montco 2040 Implementation Grant in the amount of $27,000 to be used for constructing lights at the pickleball courts. Lights are anticipated to be added later this summer/early fall.

The courts will be open to the public daily and free to use. Leagues and tournaments may be implemented in the future. Updates will be announced online at uppergwynedd.org. Additional information can be requested to Alex Kaker, Parks & Recreation Director – 215.699.7777 or [email protected]
