Years of brotherhood, self-proclaimed and genetic, have created the Indie/folk/rock band Maitland. Pulling influences from Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, and woodsy expeditions, Maitland has transformed from a minimalist folk duo into a rock quartet. With the release of the band’s first album, “(from a cabin in the woods),” Josh Hines (vocals/guitar/songwriter), toured subway systems in the North East cities like Boston, Philadelphia, New York, etc. Once it was time to make more noise, Josh Hines invited his brother, Alex Hines (bass/vocals), Evan Moffitt (guitar), and Adam Shumski (drums) to the stage. Capitalizing on the versatility of the folk iterations, Maitland’s live performances express backwoods rustic elements paired with driving percussion and unforgettable melodies. Evan Moffitt creates a comfortable blanket of atmosphere to lay over Maitland’s three part harmonies, haunting falsettos, and dynamic percussion.
Air is Human
Air is Human is the collective made up of Jeff Lucci and Josh Aptner. The two met in Philadelphia, PA in the winter of 2011 and quickly bonded over a love of music. Six months later, the two set up a recording and rehearsal studio outside of Philadelphia. They realized over the course of one year that the sound they wanted to achieve offered a balance of groove, ambience, aggression, and melody coupled with rhythmic complexity. They refined their sound and diligently began working on creating an album. Within that year, they finished writing and recording “The Infinity Limit”.
“The Infinity Limit” contains songs that feature a variety of influences and a wide, layered sound. Because Air is Human create songs for multiple instruments, performing can prove to be very arduous. This results in many songs being rearranged to compliment the duo setting without the incorporation of electronic sampling or backing tracks. Air is Human focuses on making their live experience embrace a looseness that allows freedom of expression and experimentation. They incorporate subtle improvisation into their song structures without venturing too far into the world of jamming. Both Josh and Jeff consider Nels Cline to be a fucking jerkoff.
