An industrial city situated in Northeastern Pennsylvania, you could say Scranton quietly prides itself on a tried-and-true Rust Belt blue-collar work ethic.
For their fourth full-length album and first for Roadrunner Records Graveyard Shift, Motionless In White—Chris Motionless [Vocals], Ricky Horror [Guitar], Ryan Sitkowski [Guitar], Ghost [Bass], and Vinny Mauro [Drums]—dug into the roots of their hometown’s pervasive attitude.
“We’re a band that came out of the small town blue-collar spirit,” affirms Chris. “We put ten years into growing this and working hard to do what we love the most. We look forward to putting in another ten. Both the area we come from and the fan base brought us to this point. Graveyard Shift is all about that work ethic. It’s been instilled in us. Early on, we realized if you give the time and effort to chase a dream, it’s possible to achieve it by the sheer amount of drive and passion you have.”
Since 2006, that ethos has fueled Motionless In White’s rise to the upper echelon of modern rock. Albums such as 2010’s Creatures and Infamous in 2012 would galvanize a rabid fan base around the quintet. During 2014, Reincarnate reached new heights, bowing at #9 on the Billboard Top 200 and claiming #1 on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums Chart. The title track and lead single turned into a Top 20 Active Rock smash and notched 13.2 million YouTube views and 9.8 million Spotify streams. Simultaneously, they have shared stages alongside everyone from Slipknot, Korn, and Breaking Benjamin to A Day To Remember and Marilyn Manson in addition to making arresting festival appearances at Warped Tour, Aftershock, Rock On The Range, Rock Allegiance, and beyond.
In 2016, they entered a Los Angeles studio with producer and longtime collaborator Drew Fulk [Emmure, Crown The Empire] to record what would become Graveyard Shift.
“It was all about writing bigger, better, and more refined songs,” exclaims the frontman. “On Reincarnate, we felt like we had discovered our true identity. This record wasn’t so much centered on experimentation as it was on refinement. In the past, I feel like I always placed the vocals second to music. This time, there was a focus on trying to make sure the vocals had their big moments. That was a major key in really making Graveyard Shift separate from all of the other albums. I haven’t really been able to look back at anything I would’ve done differently or something I didn’t feel like I put my whole heart into here. I just feel incredibly confident about everything on the record.”
◊ The Amity Affliction ◊
With 2014’s Let The Ocean Take Me The Amity Affliction delivered a record that so perfectly encapsulated everything that defines them it was hard to imagine them ever besting it. That This Could Be Heartbreak surpasses it across the board is a truly humbling feat, though their longtime faithful are more than aware of their drive to keep pushing things ever forward, never releasing anything less than their absolute best. When vocalist Joel Birch describes it as the “darkest” release of their career he is not exaggerating, and featuring his most brutally honest lyrics to date the eleven tracks provide an unflinching snapshot of a man desperately consumed by alcoholism and depression. However, this description does not provide the whole picture, for it is also the Australian band’s most rousing, urgent, sonically rich and accomplished record to date. “When it comes to any record we go into making it with the mindset of just trying to write better songs than the last time,” states bassist / vocalist Ahren Stringer. “When you listen to this record you’ll be hearing a real rollercoaster of emotion and a true reflection of everything we’ve been trying to do throughout our career. We get better as songwriters, and for us it’s all about beating that last record. Which we did.”
◊ Miss May I ◊
Troy, Ohio's Miss May I came together in 2006 while their members were still in high school. Consisting of guitarists Justin Aufdemkampe and B.J. Stead, singer Levi Benton, drummer Jerod Boyd, and bassist/vocalist Ryan Neff, the quintet plays highly technical, driving metalcore. With searing guitar work and dual sung/screamed vocals, Miss May I quickly established themselves through a series of demo recordings, eventually landing a contract with Rise Records for the release of their debut full-length, 2009’s Apologies Are for the Weak. After spending a couple of years touring with bands like Carnifex, blessthefall, and the Devil Wears Prada, the band returned to the studio to begin work on its follow-up with producer Joey Sturgis. The result was their 2010 album, Monument, which reached number 76 on the Billboard 200 and was the band's most successful record to date. Miss May I spent most of the next year touring, taking part in the Van's Warped Tour as well as tours with We Came as Romans and Pierce the Veil. They finally settled into the studio in early 2012, and their third album, At Heart, followed later that year. The critically acclaimed Rise of the Lion dropped in 2014, with Deathless, their fifth studio long-player arriving the following year. 2016 saw the band leave Rise Records and ink a deal with SharpTone, joining a roster that included genre heavy weights We Came as Romans and Attila. In April 2017, Miss May I dropped «Lost in the Gray,» the first single from their much-anticipated sixth studio long-player, Shadows Inside, which arrived later that May.
