The Huntress and Holder of Hands
MorganEve Swain is The Huntress and Holder of Hands. A multi-instrumental string player, vocalist and songwriter, Swain is widely known as half of the music duo, Brown Bird, with her husband, Dave Lamb. The duo, who enjoyed national and international success, spent over six years performing and touring until Lamb’s untimely passing, at age 36, from leukemia in April 2014. That summer, Swain launched The Huntress and Holder of Hands, which began as a creative vessel for exploring both her grief and her growth. Her original songs were home-recorded and solo-performed using multi-layer tracks of voice and strings. Live, The Huntress and Holder of Hands employs five musicians with duties on cello, string bass, electric bass, voice and drums, with Swain primarily on five-string viola and guitar.
Deeply rooted in Swain and Lamb’s shared experience, The Huntress and Holder of Hands pulls creative energy from the same emotional place as Brown Bird, building unique harmony, string and bass-driven pieces influenced by Eastern European, Americana and Middle Eastern music, among other genres, and offering an intense musical and lyrical experience that explores love, loss, power and strength. The debut album, Avalon, will be released September 15th, 2017.
Emily Dix Thomas (EDT) is a cellist, a studio and touring musician, a composer and song writer, a teacher, and an interdisciplinary performer. She is a versatile musician, skilled as a soloist and ensemble performer, and her work ranges from classical to contemporary, folk to doom, oceanic soundscapes to noise, and sometimes mixed media collaborations featuring puppets, tears, and pop covers.
EDT’s artistic and human practices are informed by a lived experience of queer and feminine identity. Her work and thinking centers these identities, as she considers how to create artistic environments that are supportive, exploratory, and healing in ways the greater world is not. She values beauty, new definitions of beauty, weirdness, discipline, and care.
In addition to her solo work, EDT performs with the Huntress and Holder of Hands, Seaspace Landscape, Feminist Conference, and Correspondences. In the past, she has toured and performed throughout the US and internationally with Young at Heart Chorus and Vio/Miré.
As an educator, EDT works with learners of all ages. She teaches cello privately, has taught individual and ensemble music with Community Music Works, has served as a guest artist and educator with Frequency Writers, and led an arts integration workshop for the teachers in a public school system. She values experimentation and play in learning spaces.
EDT is from Portland Maine, and now lives in Providence Rhode Isla
