This is a 4 session workshop running from 9/6-9/27. Please plan to attend all 4 classes.

Digital photography has largely replaced film, but surprisingly, old-style analog photography is having a large comeback. The reasons for this are as varied as photographers but it’s abundantly clear that film is here to stay and it continues to garner a devoted following who are using it as a powerful creative tool to produce stunning photographs. At this free, four session workshop, the non-technical person can sample this engaging, low-cost, do-it-yourself, experimental trend. No matter what kind of photography you do, you will leave as a better, more informed photographer. All skill and experience levels welcome.

Workshops are conducted by RA Friedman, who teaches analog (film/darkroom) photography at the Pratt Institute in New York City. He lives in Philadelphia a, regularly shoots with film and has a fondness as well as extensive knowledge of all types of film cameras. Friedman has been working with pinhole photography since 2010.

9/6 Try it! Take a fun, lively and non-technical journey through the current scene in pinhole photography, an art form that goes back over 150 years. Using a small opening made with a pin instead of a lens, you’ll get to try your hand at making your own creative pinhole images using instant film and see the unusual, often amazing results right away; plus the photos are yours to keep.

9/13: Build it! This workshop will explore easy, practical ideas around DIY photography. It will look at and demonstrate various options and materials. Participants will then build their own 35mm pinhole cameras from scratch to take with them and use.

9/20: Snap it! Dust off that old film camera or try one of ours. Film cameras turn up everywhere: in the backs of closets, at flea markets, thrift stores, and of course, online. You can still get film for many of them or adapt them to what is available. Join us for a practical, hands-on evening that will have you snapping film shots in no time!

09/27: Develop it! Finding places to get your film developed can be difficult. The good news is you can do it yourself using non-toxic ingredients you can find around your house or buy at the grocery or drug store and you don’t need to invest much cash or even have a darkroom! In this workshop you’ll see how it’s done, how to get around some of the common pitfalls to get great results.
