Northern Ireland's Two Door Cinema Club feature singer/guitarist/programmer Alex Trimble, guitarist/singer Sam Halliday, and bassist/singer Kevin Baird. Trimble and Halliday met in school, and met Baird through mutual friends. The trio began playing as Two Door Cinema Club in 2007 and skipped going to university to focus on the band. Fortunately, the gamble paid off — the band's debut EP, Four Words to Stand On, was released in January 2009 by the hip French label Kitsuné to positive reviews and music blog buzz, which grew with the release of April's single «Something Good Can Work.» That summer, Two Door Cinema Club recorded their debut album in London's Eastcote Studios with Eliot James, which they mixed with producer Philippe Zdar in Paris that fall. The group's remixes of Phoenix's «Lasso» and Chew Lips' «Salt Air» also appeared that year, and by 2009's end, the group was among the acts featured in the BBC Sound of 2010 Poll. Another single, «Undercover Martyn,» arrived in January 2010, shortly before the band's first full-length Tourist History was released.

Beacon In 2012, Two Door Cinema Club returned with its sophomore album, the Jacknife Lee-produced Beacon. Generally well-received, the album hit the number one spot on the Irish album charts, and number two in the United Kingdom. It featured the two singles «Sleep Alone» and «Sun,» and preceded a short documentary about the band, entitled What We See, which followed the trio on tour during the summer of 2012. It was a wait of four years before the band's third effort materialized. Having arrived in the summer of 2016, Gameshow featured the lead single «Are We Ready? (Wreck),» and the band undertook a string of high-profile festival appearances — including Glastonbury and Coachella — to promote the new release.

Indie rock band Circa Waves was formed in Liverpool in May 2013 by guitarist and singer Keiran Shuddall, who had decided to «knuckle down» and commit fully to music after spending years in a succession of no-hope garage bands. After writing a batch of songs and putting some demos online, he recruited second guitarist Joe Falconer, bassist Sam Rourke, and drummer Sian Plummer (male, despite his name), and the band undertook a few short tours of the U.K. and Europe. Their melodic, propulsive rock sound, heavily inspired by the Strokes and also often compared to the Vaccines, was well-received by audiences, and such a buzz built around them that they were soon offered a deal with Transgressive Records, erstwhile home of Foals, the Subways, and Mystery Jets. Their debut single, the double-A-side «Get Away»/«Good for Me,» was released in December 2013 and was almost immediately hailed the «Hottest Record in the World» by taste-making BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe. In 2015, Circa Waves released their debut full-length album, Young Chasers, on Virgin/EMI. The reception they received for their debut instilled the band with a greater sense of confidence, as a result they returned to the studio almost immediately after touring; with their renewed vigor they created a heavier, beefier sophomore record, 2017's Different Creatures.
