Spiritualism Collections Tour
Curator of Women’s History Cornelia King will show material in the Library Company’s collections related to Spiritualism, one of the most sensational religious movements in the 19th century. Beginning in spring 1848, Margaret and Kate Fox were among the earliest practitioners when they started hearing “mysterious” noises at night. Soon millions of Americans believed that it was possible to communicate with spirits of the dead. The Fox sisters in particular gained fame and fortune as celebrity mediums. Massive hoax or not, Spiritualism empowered many women and generally promoted hope for a better world grounded in harmony with the universe.
