BalletX, Philadelphia’s premier contemporary ballet company, presents its Spring Series 2018 at The Wilma Theater, March 7-18. The series features world premieres by Darrell Grand Moultrie and Trey McIntyre, as well as the return of 'Increasing' (2014) by Matthew Neenan, BalletX co-founder.
Darrell Grand Moultrie returns to BalletX with a world premiere entitled 'Vivir,' celebrating the Latin, Afro-Caribbean music of his native Spanish Harlem. Described as “exuberant and deliberate” by The Washington Post, his work has appeared on the Colorado Ballet, Atlanta Ballet, and Dance Theatre of Harlem. Most recently, he choreographed for Beyoncé’s Mrs. Carter World Tour, and the musical Witness Uganda at American Repertory Theater.
Trey McIntyre’s love of 1970’s Motown, American Bandstand, and Soul Train springs to life in a new work called 'The Boogeyman,' embodying the era’s high-octane energy. To capture the counterculture spirit of the time, he collaborates with Andrea Lauer, who costumed Broadway’s American Idiot. Highly prolific, McIntyre has worked with Stuttgart Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, and New York City Ballet. His 2016 BalletX premiere, 'Big Ones,' was hailed by The New York Times as “funny, touching, poignant, stirring.”
Matthew Neenan’s 'Increasing' premiered at Vail Dance Festival’s NOW: Premieres in 2014, with guest dancers Tiler Peck and Robert Fairchild of New York City Ballet. The work is set to Schubert’s Quintet in C Major, performed live by alumni from Curtis Institute of Music and Yale University. Covering its premiere, The New York Times wrote, “Mr. Neenan is one of those rare dance makers who can create a world that coexists beside important music.”
The 12-performance run will also invite audiences deeper into the world of contemporary ballet through two signature BalletX X-Process events: a pre-show Conversations with the Artists on opening night and a post-show Q&A on March 8. BalletX will host Young Xers Night, a pre-show open bar and afterparty for young dance lovers and professionals, on March 15.
